We needed a metaphor that would flip the viewer’s idea of what dying looks like. The whole point of a hospice is to change that picture — not by cheating death, but by making the last days of life free of fear, humiliation, and loneliness. The candle we watch go out turns out to be blown out on a birthday cake. Either way, the flame goes out. But hospice is about life — and candles get blown out on birthday cakes.
